(July 2009) Hm. Some updates required!
- I started this blog for the reasons listed but have had a love/hate relationship with the process. Long droughts followed by short bursts of activity. Mostly because the original goal of establishing a communication system has not come to fruition; I’d lost the plot. I’ve since decided that the point of this blog is to explore the process of making medical and social decisions on behalf of a non-verbal child without expressive language.
- I’m currently on hiatus from teaching and (unfortunately) practicing yoga – mostly due to time constraints. I take care of my kids and household, work, spend time with C (my best friend and partner) and run. Not a lot of time for anything else!
- My freelance work is largely focused on website and blog development, software demo production and some proposal writing. Check out http://lowtotheground.ca . Anyone need a website? :)
- I hardly ever wear those glasses anymore.
———-
(Jan 2007) I am Owen’s mother. And Angus’ mom too. Much of my time is spent caring for or tending to the needs of my two boys. As a single parent, I also need to earn a living – which I do in two ways: I’m a yoga teacher in the Scaravelli tradition, trained at the Esther Myers Yoga Studio in Toronto. I am also a freelance contractor – a kind of renaissance IT consultant, skilled in website development, software application training, project management, technical writing, proposal writing… basically anything IT-related that requires someone to just sit down and think about things, figure it all out, and then write it down or explain it to someone else. Vague, yes – but miraculously, so far, there’s been no shortage of work. Just lack of time!
I started this blog for several reasons:
- to provide me with a purposeful writing outlet (I like to write, but I am so bad at journaling. I need a bigger point.),
- to find others through this forum, for sharing, advice, feedback – a community of support to help me refine Owen’s communication plan, and
- to sow the seeds for a book – about what specifically? I’m not sure yet. Perhaps this blog will organically point me in the right direction.
Generally, I am hoping to receive relevant, content-related comments through this blog, which may include sharing of similar stories, ideas for our communication plan, requests for feedback on a similar matter, impressions of our approach, etc. So please participate! I look forward to hearing from you…
